Evaly Managing Director Mohammad Rassel and his wife Shamima Nasrin, chairman of the e-commerce platform, have been sued for fraud and harassment.

Arif Baker, a consumer, filed the case against the duo with Gulshan Police Station around 1:35am, AnindaTalukdar, sub-inspector of the police station, told the Business Insider Bangladesh.

In his case statement, Baker said he paid Tk 3.10 lakh to Evaly through online banking between May 29 and June 16 to buy some products from the ecommerce platform.

The products were supposed to be delivered within seven to 45 days after deposition of the cash but, the Evaly authorities embezzled the money without ensuring the delivery, Aninda Talukdar, also duty officer of the police station said quoting the case statement.

Earlier on September 5, Baker contacted the customer care centre of the Evaly to get delivery of products but failed.

Baker along with some friends went to the Evaly office in Dhanmondi area on September 9 to meet its managing director but they were intercepted. At one stage, Rassel met Baker and refused to pay the cash back, according to the case statement.

Baker, in his case, said Evaly collected money from around 700 to 800 people and embezzled it.

Evaly misses deadline to file second report

The beleaguered e-commerce platform Evaly failed to submit its second report on the statistics of its customers and merchants on August 26—the deadline set by the commerce ministry.

On August 19, Evaly in its first report submitted to the commerce ministry said its liabilities to customers and merchants stood at Tk 543 crore as of mid-July, which is 35 percent higher than the amount found by an initial probe of the central bank.

On August 11, a committee headed by commerce secretary decided to allow three different time frames for valuation of assets and liabilities of Evaly, and determining how many customers and merchants the company owed to.

On July 19, the commerce ministry sent a letter to Evaly, asking it to submit a report by August describing their assets and liabilities.

On July 10, the Anti-Corruption Commission imposed a travel ban on Evaly chairman and managing director as they launched an inquiry into an allegation of embezzling Tk 338.62 crore from customers’ and merchants’ wallets.
