Covid claims one more life, infects 535 in 24hrs

Bangladesh health authorities recorded one more death from coronavirus and 535 fresh related cases in the last 24 hours till Sunday morning, according to the health department.

With the updated data, the death toll of the virus rose to 29,369 while the caseload to 20,26,212, said the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in a handout.

The daily case positivity rate stood at 14.35 percent down from Saturday’s 15.28 percent, said the DGHS.

Besides, the recovery rate of the virus declined to 97.03 from Saturday’s 97.04 percent while the mortality rate remained unchanged at 1.45 percent.

The new cases were detected after testing 3,727 samples at 881 government-authorised laboratories in the country during the 24 hours.

Meanwhile, some 476 patients recovered from the virus-related illness taking the total number to 19,66,107.

The lone victim was female and she was aged between 61 and 70 years. She breathed her last while undergoing treatment at a government hospital in Rangpur division.

The health authorities also detected 468 cases in Dhaka, 16 in Mymensingh, 20 in Chattogram, 13 in Rajshahi, five in Khulna, three each in Rangpur and Barishal and seven in Sylhet divisions during the period.

The country reported its first zero Covid-related death in a single day on November 20 last year, along with 178 infections.

The health department recorded 40 deaths from the virus and 13,251 cases in September.

Bangladesh registered its highest daily caseload of 16,230 on July 28 last year and daily fatalities of 264 on August 10 the same year.

Since the outbreak of the virus in Wuhan province in China in 2019, the health authorities in Bangladesh confirmed the first case on March 8, 2020, and the first death on March 18 of the same year.

Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics, has recorded 65, 50, 368 deaths so far caused by the virus and 62, 33, 36, 518 cases worldwide.
