Bangladesh saw a fresh surge in death and infection of coronavirus as the health authorities recorded five more fatalities caused by the virus and 480 new cases in the last 24 hours till Saturday morning.

With the updated data, the death toll of the virus rose to 29,368 and the caseload to 20,25,677, according to a handout of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The daily case positivity rate stood at 15.28 percent up from Friday’s 14.66 percent, said the DGHS.

Besides, the recovery and mortality rate of the virus remained unchanged at 97.04 percent and 1.45 percent respectively.

The new cases were detected after testing 3,141 samples at 881 government-authorised laboratories in the country during the 24 hours.

Meanwhile, some 443 patients recovered from the virus-related illness taking the total number to 19,65,631.

The DGHS could not inform further detail about the five deceased.

The health authorities also detected 397 cases in Dhaka, nine in Mymensingh, 46 in Chattogram, 14 in Rajshahi, six in Khulna, one in Barishal and seven in Sylhet divisions during the period.

The country reported its first zero Covid-related death in a single day on November 20 last year, along with 178 infections.

On January 28, of the current year, Bangladesh registered its highest daily positivity rate at 33.37 percent reporting 15,440 cases and 20 deaths.

The country registered the highest daily caseload of 16,230 on July 28 last year, while the highest number of daily fatalities was 264 on August 5 last year.

Since the outbreak of the virus in Wuhan province in China in 2019, the health authorities in Bangladesh confirmed the first case on March 8, 2020, and the first death on March 18 of the same year.

Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics, has recorded 65, 49, 641 deaths so far caused by the virus and 62, 30, 67, 774 cases worldwide.

Covid claimed 32 lives in August in Bangladesh

The coronavirus dashboard shows that a total of 32 people died from the coronavirus from August 1 to 31 and of them, 20 were vaccinated and 12 were unvaccinated.

Of the 20, one was the first dose recipient, 15 were the second dose and four were the booster dose recipients.
