Covid claims one more life, infects 708 in 24hrs

Bangladesh saw an upward turn in the infection rate of coronavirus as the health authorities recorded one more death from the virus and 708 related cases in the last 24 hours till Friday morning.

With the updated data, the death toll rose to 29,363 while the caseload mounted to 20,25,197, according to Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The daily case positivity rate stood at 14.66 percent which was 13.53 percent on Thursday, said the DGHS.

The health authorities found the new cases after testing 4,828 samples at 881 government authorised laboratories in the country during the 24 hours period.

Meanwhile, some 687 patients recovered from the virus-related illness taking the total number of recovery to 19,65,188.

The mortality and recovery rate of the virus remained unchanged at 1.45 percent and 97.04 percent respectively.

The lone victim was male and he was aged between 61 and 70 years. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at government hospital in Dhaka.

The health authorities also detected 544 cases in Dhaka, 39 in Mymensingh, 48 in Chattogram, 32 in Rajshahi, two in Rangpur, 11 in Khulna, 13 in Barishal and 19 in Sylhet divisions during the period.

The country reported its first zero Covid-related death in a single day on November 20 last year, along with 178 infections.

On January 28, Bangladesh registered its previous highest daily positivity rate at 33.37 percent reporting 15,440 cases and 20 deaths.

The country registered the highest daily caseload of 16,230 on July 28 last year, while the highest number of daily fatalities was 264 on August 10 last year.

Since the outbreak of the virus in Wuhan province in China in 2019, the health authorities in Bangladesh confirmed the first case on March 8, 2020, and the first death on March 18 of the same year.

Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics, has recorded 65, 47, 764 deaths so far caused by the virus and 62, 25, 53, 684 cases worldwide.
