Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque has warned that the government will resort to law in a bid to compel people to wear masks for containing the recent spike of the coronavirus.

“Bangladesh has been experiencing a sharp spike in the infection rate of coronavirus for the last few days and thus we are worried a bit but not afraid of it. We are prepared and our hospitals are well equipped now,” said the health minister at a programme in Dhaka on Wednesday.

He said the departments concerned held a meeting last week and came up with some recommendations including restoration of the no mask no services and maintaining social distancing policies to contain the spread of the virus.

The school and office-goers and train and bus travelers must wear masks, he said, adding that the cabinet division has already sent letters to different respective authorities to execute the decision.

“We are witnessing two to three coronavirus related deaths for the last three days. Amid the situation, we expect that people would wear masks enthusiastically,” he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, the cabinet division issued a notification once again making wearing masks mandatory for the citizens.

People in public places will have to wear masks, otherwise punitive measures will be taken against the violators, according to the notification.

The cabinet division also asked people to undergo Covid-19 testing if they feel any symptoms like fever and cold.

In recent days, Covvd-19 infection has been increasing across the country. For the last two days, over 2,000 people were diagnosed Covid positive, and the infection rate rose to over 15 percent
