Bangladesh reported five more coronavirus-related deaths and 291 new cases till Tuesday morning, showing an upward trend in infection of the virus compared to that of the previous day.

The country saw four Covid-linked deaths along with 277 fresh cases during the same corresponding hours till Monday morning.

With the latest cases, the daily positivity rate of the virus again increased to 1.45 percent from Monday’s 1.44 percent and Sunday’s 1.03 percent, said the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in a handout this evening.

Besides, the total fatalities of the virus rose to 28,010 while the caseload stood at 15,78,011 in the country so far, said the DGHS.

According to the updated official chart, the recovery rate of the virus slightly increased to 97.78 percent after remaining unchanged at 97.77 percent for many days.

On the other hand, the fatality rate of the virus remained unchanged at 97.77 percent during the 24 hours period.

The fresh cases were detected after testing 20,014 samples at 848 government authorised laboratories in the country amid the growing concern over outbreak of the new ‘Omicron’ variant of coronavirus.

Bangladesh logged this year’s first zero Covid related deaths with 178 cases on November 20.

The country last witnessed an upswing in fatalities reaching its peak on August 5 and 10 when 264 deaths were recorded.

During mid-January to the first week of March, 2021 the infection rate remained below five percent and from the last week of March 2021, the infection and death toll gradually increased that led to the start of the second wave of Covid-19 in the country.

Four deaths were reported in Dhaka division while a single death was in Chattogram division during the period.

Besides, Rajshahi, Khulna, Sylhet, Barishal, Rangpur and Mymensingh divisions did not see any case of casualty caused by the virus at the same time.

Of the deceased, four were male while one was female and they were aged between 51 and 80 years.

Four of them breathed their last while undergoing treatment at public hospitals and one at a private hospital.

The first case of coronavirus was reported on March 8 in 2020 and the first death caused by the virus on March 18 in the same year in Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics, has recorded 52, 81,074 deaths so far caused by the virus and 26, 68, 49, 784 cases worldwide.
