Bangladesh witnessed a slight spike in death and infection of coronavirus as the health authorities counted 36 more deaths and 1,376 new cases in the last 24 hours till Wednesday morning.

The updated official figures took the country’s total coronavirus fatalities to 27,313 while the caseload mounted to 15, 47,176, said the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in a press statement this afternoon.

The country last recorded 22 single-day deaths on May 27 and 26 on September 20, this year. The health authorities last recorded 5.13 percent daily case positivity rate on March 9 this year.

The country last witnessed the upswing in fatalities reaching its peak on August 5 and 10 when 264 deaths were recorded.

Between May and June this year, there was a 273 percent rise in monthly caseloads and 162 percent in fatalities.

The new cases were detected after testing 28,736 samples at 810 government authorised laboratories across the country in the same time.

Some 1,427 people were declared free from the infection taking the total number of recovery to 15,06,136 with the recovery rate 97.35 percent up from Tuesday’s 97.34 percent.

Meanwhile, the fatality rate of the virus increased to 1.77 percent after remaining static at 1.76 percent for last few weeks.

Among the new victims, 18 died in Dhaka division, 10 in Chattogram, two each in Rajshahi, Khulna and Sylhet divisions, one each in Rangpur and Mymensingh divisions while no casualty was reported in Barishal division during the period.

Of them, 17 male and 19 were female and the deceased were aged between 11 and 100 years and majority of them were between 51 and 80 years, according to the DGHS daily chart.

Among the victims, 30 breathed their last while undergoing treatment at different public hospitals, five died at different private hospitals while one at a house in the 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics, has recorded 47, 24, 464 deaths so far caused by the virus and 23, 03, 94, 270 cases worldwide.

Since the outbreak of the virus in China in 2019, the health authority in Bangladesh confirmed the first case on March 8, 2020 and recorded the first death on March 18 in the same year.

Bangladesh to get 71 lakh Pfizer, 18 lakh Moderna jabs

Earlier in the day, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam said that Bangladesh will be given 71 lakh doses of Pfizer and 18 lakh of Moderna vaccines as part of the US donation and regular supply under the COVAX facility.

These vaccine doses will be shipped in the last quarter of this year, Shahriar added.

He said they are hopeful of getting more vaccine allocations during the period, and thanked the USA and COVAX for the support.
