Bangladesh logged 35 more coronavirus-related deaths and 1,190 fresh cases in the last 24 hours till Saturday morning.

The fresh numbers pushed the country’s total death toll to 27,182 while the caseload mounted to 15,41,300, Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), said in a press release this afternoon.

The daily case positivity rate declined to 6.05 percent down from Friday’s 6.41 percent while the World Health Organisation recommends five percent for normal situation.

The new cases were detected after testing 19,668 samples at 808 government authorised laboratories in the country during the 24 hours period, the DGHS said.

Meanwhile, some 1,645 people were declared free from the virus at the same time, taking the total number of the recovery to 14,98,654.

The recovery rate rose to 97.23 percent up from Friday’s 97.20 percent and Thursday’s 97.13 percent while the death rate remained static at 1.76 percent for the last few days.

The country last witnessed the upswing in fatalities reaching its peak on August 5 and 10 when 264 deaths were recorded.

Between May and June this year, there was a 273 percent rise in monthly caseloads and 162 percent in fatalities.

In July, there was a 150 percent increase in caseloads and a 170 percent rise in deaths compared to the previous month, according to the WHO.

Among the new victims, 19 died in Dhaka division, six in Chattogram, three each in Khulna and Rajshahi divisions, two in Sylhet, one each in Barishal and Rangpur divisions while no casualty was reported Mymensingh division during the period.

Of them, 16 were male and 19 were female. The deceased were aged between 11 and 100 and the majority of them were between 41 and 90 years, according to the DGHS daily chart.

Among the victims, 27 breathed their last while undergoing treatment at different public hospitals while eight died at different private hospitals in the 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics, has recorded 46, 95, 116 deaths so far caused by the virus and 22, 85, 17, 227 cases worldwide.

Since the outbreak of the virus in China in 2019, the health authority in Bangladesh confirmed the first case on March 8, 2020 and recorded the first death on March 18 in the same year.

Bangladesh receives another consignment of Sinopharm vaccine

Meanwhile, Bangladesh received another consignment of 50 lakh Sinopharm vaccine from China to accelerate the country’s inoculation programme.

A flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines carrying the vaccine landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 2am. With the fresh shipment, China has so far sent 2.49 crore vaccines to Bangladesh.

Vaccination of students aged 12-17 to begin within 20 days

Vaccination of students aged between 12 to 17 years will begin within the next 20 days, said Health Minister Zahid Maleque announced at a meeting in Manikganj on Saturday.

The children will be inoculated with US-made Pfizer vaccine doses as it is suitable for them, he said, adding that all arrangements have been made to collect the vaccine doses.
