General Insurance Corporation and Neuro-Developmental Disability (NDD) Protection Trust signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to launch 'Bangabandhu Suraksha Bima’ policy for people with disabilities.

The MoU was signed on Sunday under the Ministry of Social Welfare in the conference room of the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority, said a press release.

With the policy of 'Insurance for All' in mind, the state-owned General Insurance Corporation, as part of its social responsibility, took the initiative to cover the provision of health services to people with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

Managing Director Syed Shahriar Ahsan on behalf of General Insurance Corporation and Managing Director (Joint Secretary) Dr Md Anwar Ullah on behalf of NDD Suraksha Trust, signed the MoU.

According to the provisions of the NDD Protection Test Act, 2013, the main purpose of this insurance is to provide self-insurance services at affordable premiums to people with autism, down syndrome, intellectual disability and cerebral palsy.

In this case, there is no problem in taking the insurance policy for the pre-existing physical condition of the insured.

Moreover, no medical examination is required before taking the insurance risk and any government hospital has the facility to reimburse the cost of medical treatment, the press release added.

Besides, expenses before and after hospitalisation can be reimbursed within the prescribed limits.
At the initial stage, all the NDD persons between the ages of 3 to 25 years in Bangladesh will be able to avail this insurance policy.

Through this insurance scheme, this health insurance coverage will be given up to a maximum of one lakh taka at a premium of six hundred taka per annum to people with physical and menstrual needs. This will ensure their proper treatment as well as their social empowerment and rights.

However, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will officially inaugurate the 'Bangabandhu Suraksha Bima’ as chief guest on March 1, 2022, at the inaugural function of National Insurance Day.
