Most of the bank branches in Dhaka witnessed customers’ rush on Sunday after closure between July 20 and July 24 due to Eid-ul Azha holidays and weekend.

Also, the rush was there as banks were providing services with a limited number of branches and reduced working hours amid the lockdown imposed by the government to prevent coronavirus infections.

As per the instructions of the central bank, transactions will be done from 10 am to 1.30 pm, down from usual 10 am to 4 pm.

Thus, all the government and private banks were crowded with customers from morning to do their banking transactions.

“We have kept 73 branches open out of 132. So, there was rush of customers at some branches,” said a senior City Bank official.

As it is the first day after the Eid holidays, the pressure is a bit high, said an official of Sonali Bank’s Motijheel branch. It was seen that many people were in queue for withdrawal of cash.

Banking operations are being carried out with a limited number of people as per the instructions of the Central Bank. Thus like other banks, this bank has seen a slight slowdown in all transactions.

However, many have reported being harassed by law enforcement agencies while coming to banks.

Sahera Khatun, a resident of Gopibagh, who came to deposit money in Sonali Bank, said, “Police interrogated me at Gopibagh intersection. I told him I would go to the bank to deposit the money. But even after showing the slip, he didn’t believe me.”

“Later I took the other way and came to the bank as he didn’t allow me to come,” she added.

After Eid, the 14-day strict ban came into force across the country from last Friday. But Bangladesh Bank issued a circular on July 13 to keep banking services run amid restrictions or lockdowns.
