Private commercial banks (PCBs) donated around Tk 300 crore to the Prime Minister's Relief and Welfare Fund in a bid to help flood-affected people.

Some 37 PCBs donated the funds at an event attended by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina virtually on Monday. Principal Secretary of Prime Minister Dr Ahmad Kaikaus received the funds from different banks at the PM's office.

Of the banks, 27 - from first-generation to third-generation - donated Tk 10 crore each, while the fourth-generation banks gave Tk 2 crore each. NRBC donated Tk 4 crore and the newly established Bengal Commercial Bank Tk 1 crore.

Chairman of Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB) and EXIM Bank Chairman Md Nazrul Islam Mazumdar was present. Chairmen of the board of directors and managing directors of different banks handed over the cheque on behalf of their respective organisations.

The recent record-breaking floods in Bangladesh have wreaked havoc as an estimated 72 lakh people have been affected and are in desperate need of shelter and emergency relief items in the north-eastern region of the country, said the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) on Tuesday.
