Dengue death crosses 900, 16 die in 24hrs

The death toll from dengue crossed 900 as 16 more patients died of the mosquito-borne fever in the last 24 hours till Sunday morning, according to the health department.

With the fresh 16 deaths, this year’s total casualties from the disease rose to 909 while 316 patients died as of September 24, according to a handout of the Directorate General Health Service (DGHS).   

During the 24 hours period, seven patients died while undergoing treatment at different hospitals in Dhaka and nine outside it, according to the handout.

Meanwhile, a total of 3,800 patients were hospitalised across the country and of them 812 in the capital Dhaka and 2,196 outside it.

A total of 10,470 dengue patients are undergoing treatment at different hospitals. Of them, 3,794 are in Dhaka while 6,676 are outside of the capital city.

 According to the DGHS, around 1, 78, 725 patients were admitted with the fever in the current year and of them 78,915 patients in different hospitals of Dhaka and 1, 08, 810 patients outside it.

With the new cases, the total number of patients rose to 1,87,725 the statement said, adding: "This year, some 1,76,346 patients were released from different hospitals out of the total patients."

The authorities have recorded the highest number of dengue positive cases outside Dhaka in August this year, meaning the mosquito disease gripped the entire country.

August witnessed 71,976 dengue positive cases, the highest cases in a single month since dengue outbreak began in 2000 in the country.
