The health authorities recorded nine more deaths from dengue in the last 24 hours till Saturday morning, mounting this year’s death toll to 537, according to the health department.

During the period, 1,960 more patients were hospitalised with the viral fever, the Directorate General of Health Service (DGHS) said in a press statement this afternoon.

Of the new patients, 833 were admitted to different hospitals in Dhaka and the rest outside the capital, said the DGHS.

A total of 8,232 dengue patients, including 3,846 in the capital, are now receiving treatment at different hospitals across the country.

The DGHS recorded 1, 12,184 dengue cases and 1, 03,411 recoveries this year.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) urged swift action as dengue cases surge in Bangladesh.

“The higher incidence of dengue is taking place in the context of an unusual episodic amount of rainfall, combined with high temperatures and high humidity, which have resulted in an increased mosquito population throughout Bangladesh,” WHO said.
