Operations of Payra coal-fired power plant will remain suspended after June 5 due to scarcities of coal, State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid has said.

A part of the Payra power station is now inoperative and operation of another part will remain halted after June 5 due to the coal crisis, said the state minister while addressing a programme at Daffodil International University in Savar, on the outskirt of the capital Dhaka on Saturday.

The minister came up with the announcement when the country’s businesses, industries and common people are suffering immensely due to the nagging load shedding.

“It will take 20 to 25 more days to import coal as there has been late in opening LC,” said the junior minister.

Load shedding has increased in the country due to shutdown of several power plantshe said adding that the country is now facing around 1,700 MW load shedding every day.
