US Ambassador in Dhaka Peter Haas on Thursday said Washington's new visa policy will support Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Bangladeshi people's efforts to hold a free and fair election.

The ambassador made the remarks to the reporters after holding a meeting with Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen at his ministry office in Dhaka this afternoon.

“This is something we have done in support of Bangladeshi people and the Bangladesh Government, the Prime Minister herself, and everyone here who are calling for free and fair elections,” Haas said.

The recent announcement of the US new visa policy was merely a way of extending support to strengthen the democratic electoral process (in Bangladesh), Haas said.

The envoy said he met the foreign minister at a pre-scheduled meeting as part of his engagements to talk about Bangladesh-US relations.

US Secretary of State Antony J Blinken on Wednesday announced the new US visa policy to restrict the issuance of visas for any Bangladeshi individual, believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic election process in Bangladesh.

Earlier in the day, Haas held a meeting with representatives of the major political parties in the country at his office in the evolving situation following the announcement of the new visa policy.
