Bangladesh Police on Thursday introduced the first female police dog handler team comprising female members of the Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBn) to bring dynamism to operational activities in the law enforcement agency.

Seven female APBN members have been included in the police dog handler team on successful completion of their training from the K9 dog handler course, said a press release of the APBn.

The K9 dog quad will help speed up the operational activities of the APBn and provide technical support to its operational team, Mohammad Ziaul Haque, additional superintendent of police (media) of the APBn, told the Business Insider.

The female members of the unit received training from professional dog squad trainers Tony Brison (UK) and Melin Broadweek (New Zealand). The US embassy and APBn jointly organised the training course.

Commanding Officer of Airport Armed Police Battalion-13, Tofail Ahmed, handed over the certificates to the female members on completion of the training today.

The APBn launched the K9 Dog Squad unit with two Labradors, two German Shepherds and four Malinios dogs in 2017.

then, the APBn has been using the dog squad unit for checking and screening passengers and their luggage based on intelligence, said the APBn official.

Mohammad Ziaul Haque, additional superintendent of police (media) of APBn, said the government has taken a step to increase the number of dogs to 66 in the squad by 2025, according to the press release.

The government has taken the step ahead of the forthcoming inauguration of the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, he said.

Fifteen more dogs will be added to the dog squad by 2023.

A full-fledged dog squad can play an important role in preventing criminal activities, sabotage, and drug and currency smuggling incidents, speakers said during the programme.
