The Election Commission (EC) has announced the schedule for the presidential election to be held on February 19.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal announced the schedule on Wednesday after emerging from a meeting of the election commissioners at his EC office in Dhaka on Wednesday.

According to the schedule, the aspirants will have to submit their nomination papers on February 12 while the scrutiny of the nomination papers will be held on February 13.

Besides, the commission has fixed February 14 as the final date for withdrawing the candidature for the presidential post, said the CEC.

The election will be held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban from 2 pm to 5 pm on February 19 if there are multiple candidates in the election, Awal said.

On the contrary, if there is one candidate, the election of the President will not require a meeting or voting in parliament.

On April 24, 2018, President Abdul Hamid took oath as head of state for the second consecutive term and his tenure will expire on April 24 this year.

Hamid's first five-year tenure expired on the same date in 2018, after he took office in 2013.

According to Article 123 of the constitution, the presidential election must be held within 60 to 90 days before the expiry of the five-year term.

And as per the constitution, Hamid cannot become president for another term, as he was elected for two terms.

According to the constitution, members of parliament are voters in the Presidential election.
