Sugar manufacturers and refiners—Deshbondhu Group, City Group and Meghna Group—today started selling sugar at Tk 95 per kilogram at some crowded and important places in the capital to keep stable the price of the essential item.

Trucks carrying sugar from these private manufacturers on Wednesday sold sugar in the capital’s Motijheel, Zero Point, Bangladesh Secretariat, New Market, Azimpur, Kawranbazar and some other important places.

These companies started selling sugar at the retail level following request from the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection.

Talking to BSS, Director General of the Directorate of the National Consumer Rights Protection AHM Safiquzzaman said that there are certain stages for selling sugar from the mill gates to the retail level for which there remains a possibility of manipulation.

“For this, we’ve requested these industrial groups to sell sugar from trucks. Following such request, they have started selling sugar from today,” he added.

Shafiquzzaman said that to oversee the selling operations of sugar, he has visited some parts of the capital where common people were found buying sugar from the trucks.

“Such operation will continue until the market becomes stable,” he added.

Meanwhile, the state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) started selling sugar across the country at Taka 55 per kg from Monday. The Directorate also held meeting with the concerned stakeholders and the businessmen on that day to keep stable the market of sugar.

Representatives from the sugar manufacturers and mill owners assured the government in that meeting that they would boost the supply of sugar in the market which would reduce the supply shortage to a big extent.

As part of that initiative, these three industries started selling sugar from Wednesday.
