The activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of BNP, reportedly came under attack by the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), a student front of the ruling Awami League, on the Dhaka University campus, on Tuesday.

The BCL men attacked the JCD leaders and activists when they were attempting to enter the campus to meet the vice chancellor at his residence. They were interrupted at Nilkhet intersection around 4:30 pm and were thrashed, reports a campus correspondent.

The JCD leaders claimed that many of the leaders and activists sustained injuries and some of them are now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.

It is learned that DU VC Akhtaruzzaman was scheduled to meet the JCD men at his residential office around 4:30 pm.

As soon as the information spread in and around the campus, leaders and activists of the BCL took positions at all entry points to thwart JCD’s meeting with the VC.

The BCL men also announced a fresh programme of sending a memorandum to the VC over the belligerent situation on the campus.

As planned, a group of JCD men numbering 30 to 40 led by their university unit President Khorshed Alam and General Secretary Ariful Islam made their way to the campus around 4:28 pm through the Nilkhet intersection.

Instantaneously, a band of BCL men obstructed them and locked themselves into altercations, according to eyewitnesses.

At one point, the BCL swooped on the JCD men and beat them up with bamboo sticks and other local weapons.

DU unit JCD President Khorshed Alam, in an instant reaction, expressed his strong condemnation of the attack and called upon the concerned authorities to take exemplary action against the attackers.

However, the DU unit BCL General Secretary Saddam Hossain denied the allegation and said it might be an outcome of internal conflict if anything happened there.
