Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said on Saturday that BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam, its leader Khaleda Zia and their party do not believe in the country’s independence and sovereignty.

The way they showed their interests in favour of Pakistan, which they cherish in their minds, has made them fool.

Protesting the recent remarks of BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on “They were in good position during the Pakistani regime”, the minister said that no person or organization believes in the country’s independence, sovereignty, democracy and development can make such comment as it went against the spirit of the great Liberation War.

Dr Hasan said these while responding to the queries of journalists on the current affairs at local Circuit House on Friday night, reports Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha.

He said Bangladesh Awami League expects that all political parties, including the BNP, will take part in the upcoming general elections.

Hasan, also AL Joint general secretary, said the BNP leaders admired the rule of the Pakistani regime at a time when Bangladesh’s achievements are being lauded by many nations of the world.

The information and broadcasting minister said Bangladesh surpassed Pakistan in all indicators including economic, social and human development in 2015.

“Our per capita income is much higher than Pakistan and even higher than India. Before the formation of the government in 2009 by AL, the poverty rate in Bangladesh was 41 percent, now it has come down to 20 percent. Per capita income has risen to over three thousand dollars.

“Life expectancy in Bangladesh is 73 years and in Pakistan it is 67 years. Pakistani politicians including past and present prime ministers of Pakistan praised the dynamic leadership of PM Sheikh Hasina,” he added.

About the announcement of GM Quader that Jatiya Party will participate in the next elections separately, the Information Minister said that they are not aligned with the political alliance of AL.
