Govt to procure 50,000 tonnes of wheat from int’l market

The government has approved a proposal to procure 50,000 tonnes of wheat from the international market.

The import will cost the government a total of Tk 168.09 crore (Tk 33,619 per tonne).

A virtual meeting of the cabinet committee on public purchase on Wednesday approved the food ministry proposal, presided over by the finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal.

After the meeting, Cabinet Division Additional Secretary Md Zillur Rahman Chowdhury informed the media that M/S Agrocorp International Pte Ltd, Singapore will procure wheat from the international market.

The country’s total demand for wheat has been estimated at more than 4 lakh tonnes until June 30, 2022, and the current reserve is 2.35 lakh tonnes, according to food ministry data.
