Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, the 2nd senior most judges of the Appellate Division, has been appointed the 23rd chief justice (CJ) of Bangladesh.

President Abdul Hamid appointed him as per Section 95 (1) of the Constitution, according to a notification of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs issued on Thursday.

He will replace Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, who passed his last day at office on Thursday.

The tenure of Justice Hasan Foez Siddique as CJ will start from the day he takes oath, the notification said.

Justice Siddique enrolled as an advocate of the district court, the High Court Division and the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh on August 21, 1981, September 4, 1983, and May 27, 1999, respectively, according to the Supreme Court website.

He also acted as legal adviser to the Khulna City Corporation, Kushtia Municipality, Jalalabad Gas Transmission Company, and the chief law adviser of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Besides, he worked as additional attorney general for Bangladesh.

Justice Siddique elevated as a justice of the High Court Division on March 25, 2009, and as a justice of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on March 31, 2013.

He has been acting as chairman of the Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission since April 30, 2015.

Justice Siddique took part in the conference of South Asian Judges Regional Forum on Economic and Financial Crime held in Sri Lanka in 2011; South Asian Conference on Environmental Justice in Pakistan in 2012; International Conference on Environment held in New Delhi, India in 2015 and 17th International Conference of Chief Justices of the World held in Lucknow, India in 2016.
