The Padma Multipurpose Bridge, which is one of the mega projects of the Awami League-led government, will be opened to traffic from June 30, 2022.
Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam disclosed this emerging from the weekly cabinet meeting on Monday.
The bridge will connect all southern districts with capital Dhaka and ease communications with other divisions also.
To construct the bridge the government required Tk 29,000 crore, equivalent to over $3.5 billion.
The World Bank refuted to finance the bridge on suspicion of corruption, which was also rejected by a Canadian court.
Bangladesh is heading towards achieving a milestone through opening the bridge for vehicles movement.
The 6.15km bridge from Munshiganj's Mawa to Shariatpur's Zajira is visible now.
With this, the country’s long-cherished dream of building the bridge with own financing has come to be true.
The first span of the bridge was installed on 30 September 2017 and the last one on December 10, 2020.
It has taken 38 months to complete the span installation work.
