Dhaka North City Mayor Atiqul Islam has said 170 acres out of total 173 acres of land earmarked for Kalyanpur water reservoir have been grabbed by the unscrupulous occupants.
“We have already started retrieving lands from unscrupulous grabbers and cleaning them. We will have to be vocal against the illegal occupants,” the DNCC mayor said while addressing a programme at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka on Saturday.
Dhaka being an extremely dense city needs adequate open space, especially playgrounds and walkways for the citizen’s better physical and mental health, Atiqul said.
Although the playgrounds and esplanades are there on the city map prepared by Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK), they did not exist in reality as RAJUK has leased them, he said.
The mayor said RAJUK should take an initiative so that all developers are compelled to follow proper design while constructing apartments and commercial centres.
Terming Dhaka as an unplanned city, he called upon all to come forward with a view to turn it into a healthy and modern city.
