Former governor of the Bangladesh Bank Shegufta Bakht Chaudhuri passed away at a Dhaka hospital on Wednesday. He was 86 years old.

Shegufta was the fourth governor of the central bank, serving during 1987–1992, said a press release. He was also an adviser to the caretaker government in 1996.

After the 1971 Liberation War, he served as an additional secretary at the Ministry of Finance and Commerce. Later, he became the secretary at the Internal Revenue Division (IRD).

Before serving the central bank as its governor, he was the chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) from 1983 to 1987.

Born at Nabiganj upazila in Sylhet’s Habiganj in 1931, Shegufta was the nephew of prominent author Syed Mujtaba Ali.

Current Bangladesh Bank Governor Syed Fazle Kabir expressed his profound shock at the death of the late governor.
