Tobacco Control Law needs to be amended

Dhaka (Oct 28, 2020): The existing tobacco control act is needed to be amended to ensure sustainable development goals by 2040, A A M S Arefis Siddique, Chairman of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), said today.

The random use of tobacco products is not possible to be controlled due to some loopholes in the existing tobacco control law. So a strong tobacco control law and its effective enforcement is needed, he said while talking to a delegation of PROGGA, an anti-tobacco research and advocacy organization, today.

Arefis Siddique, also former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University said, it is high time to control the use of tobacco products during the outbreak of the Covid-19 in the country.

During the meeting, PROGGA also discussed some proposals including stopping smoking at restaurants and in public transport and display of tobacco products at point of sale and others.
